BIRTHS, DEATHS, and MARRIAGES
The Vital Records linked below contain an alphabetical surname listing of Geauga County births, deaths and marriages. These files were compiled from the microfilm records contained in the Chardon Library. The microfilm contains images of the original ledgers currently housed in the Geauga archives and not accessible to the public. These linked files include the Volume number and Page number of the entry in the original ledger.
There are no formal birth or death records prior to 1867. Church records, transcriptions of family Bibles, etc. may be available, but are not included herein. In 1867, the State of Ohio mandated that records of birth and death be kept. To accomplish this, the task was assigned to the tax appraiser for the township or an appointee. The appraiser took the information to the court and delivered it to the clerk. The clerk then copied the information into the ledger books. After 1908, records are kept at the Geauga County Health Department.
Marriage records were collected beginning about 1806 and this compilation covers the period ending about 1919. During this time period, county boundaries were in flux. The biggest change was on 06 March 1840 when Lake County was formed from the northern reaches of Geauga County. Consequently, some of the marriages shown in the Bride and Groom files linked below actually occurred in political entities currently in Lake County.
NOTE 1: To view a chronology of the boundary changes in Geauga County (and other Ohio counties), visit the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries chronologies page from The Newberry Library website.
NOTE 2: These records represent a compilation of information submitted to the various township clerks. Not all life events happening at the time were recorded in this way. Therefore, it is possible that these entries do not represent a complete record of all the births, deaths, and marriages occurring during the time period. They do, however, represent a complete record of the information submitted to the various township clerks. We need to recognize also that some of the records have errors that may have (or not) been corrected at a later time.
